DSCN0449Hortus Alkmaar is a botanic garden, specialised in medicinal herbs. The garden was created in 1981 for the development of natural medicines. Over the years it was expanded to its current two-hectare dimension. What makes Hortus Alkmaar so unique is its variety of types of plants and original species.

More than 750 medicinal herbs
Optietuin met bloeiende beddenOriginally the garden was not bigger than half a hectare. The collection existed of about 100 types of herbs, mostly imported from a herb garden in Germany. Gradually the garden was expanded to two hectares. The number of herbs grew to an exceptional botanic collection of over 1000 types, 750 of which are medicinal herbs.

The herb garden has been gradually developed to a botanic treasure in a natural biotope. It has a unique character, bordering an industrial area but sheltered by a green rural landscape. Hortus Alkmaar is an oasis to enjoy: from the floral riches and the peaceful quietness to the characteristic atmosphere.

Opening times of the garden
High season: 1 April to 15 October
Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 to 17.00
From May to September the garden is also open on weekends
Saturday and Sunday from 12.00 to 17.00
Low season: November and March
Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 to 16.00
Winter: from 1 December tot 1 March
Garden is closed to visitors. The shop is open Tuesday to Friday.

Groups of 10 persons or more: € 4,00
Children from 8 to 15 years old: € 2,25
Children below 8 years old: free entry

By car:
Plan your route through www.googlemaps.nl from your location of departure. Our address is Berenkoog 37, 1822 BH Alkmaar.
Public transport:
Hortus Alkmaar is reachable by public transport. By train, travel to Alkmaar Centraal where you continue with bus 10 to St. Pancras. Exit at stop Meeuwenlaan from where it is a 10-minute walk. On weekdays during peak hours you can also take bus 8 from train station Alkmaar Noord to the Berenkoog (Exit at Hamsterkoog). From there it is a 2-minute walk. Terrace and tea garden
DSCN5099At Hortus Alkmaar fresh coffee, tea, and cake is available to enjoy in the visitors centre or on the terrace. Do you prefer fresh herbal tea? Pick your own herbs in our tea garden beside the terrace. You can choose from 9 different herbs, including mint, sage, lemon balm, and lavender.

Honing met theezeefje Pay a visit to our shop to pick up a souvenir, such as honey or jam, tea from the garden, or treat yourself or a loved one to a nice gift. If you come only to enjoy a refreshment or visit the shop there is no need to pay an entrance fee.
Toilets are located at the entrance of the garden. There is no wheelchair accessible toilet available.
